Simulation Study of Electron Cloud Multipacting in Straight Sections of PEP-II
نویسنده
چکیده
Simulation studies of electron cloud multipacting were performed for the SLAC B-factory vacuum chamber for different bunch trains and solenoidal magnetic field. Results show that increasing the number of positron bunches by a factor of two and keeping the same current per bunch means that the solenoidal field needs to be doubled in order to keep the same electron cloud density. Fortunately there are regions that are “free of multipacting” at smaller values of field where the electron cloud density can not get very high. To build the electron cloud, positron bunches have to lose some amount of their kinetic energy through the longitudinal electric field. When the cloud is already established, this longitudinal field acts as an oscillating force. This action is similar to the action of RF fields in a cavity. As a result the positron bunches will have different lengths throughout the train. Contributed to Particle Accelerator Conference

The Electron Cloud Instability at Pep-ii
The electron cloud instability (ECI) at PEP-II enlarges the positron beam size at high currents and reduces the luminosity. The electrons for this instability come from multipacting electrons in the straight section vacuum chambers and, perhaps, photo-emission and secondary emission of electrons from the vacuum ante-chambers in the arcs. Solenoid and transverse field magnets have been placed ov...
متن کاملThe Electron-cloud Instability in Pep-ii: an Update
We present an update on the estimate of the growth time of the multi-bunch transverse instability in the PEP-II collider arising from the interaction of the positron beam with the accumulated electron cloud. We estimate the contributions to the growth rate arising from the dipole magnets and from the pumping straight sections. We emphasize those quantities upon which the instability is most sen...

Recent simulation results and some analytical estimates are presented on beam-induced multipacting in SPS, PS, and LHC. In particular, we discuss modifications to the secondary emission model, electron cloud build up simulated for various filling patterns, central cloud density, electron ‘pinch’ during the bunch passage, expected tune shifts and tune spreads, memory between LHC bunch trains, he...
متن کاملA Simulation Study of Electron-Cloud Instability and Beam-Induced Multipacting in the LHC
In the LHC beam pipe, photoemission and secondary emission give rise to a quasi-stationary electron cloud, which is established after a few bunch passages. The response of this electron cloud to a transversely displaced bunch resembles a short-range wake eld and can cause a fast instability. In addition, beaminduced multipacting of the electrons may lead to an enhanced gas desorption and an ass...

The mechanism of electron multipacting in long bunched proton machine has been quantitatively described by the electron energy gain and electron motion. Some important parameters related to electron multipacting are investigated in detail. It is proved that multipacting is sensitive to beam intensity, longitudinal beam profile shape and transverse beam size. Agreements are achieved among our an...
